Is my Electrical Equipment Safe?
You can find out whether your electrical equipment is safe is by carring out suitable checks / inspections depending on your circumstances. The type and extent of your inspection should depend on a few factors, including:
- The level of risk involved
- When the equipment was previously inspected / tested
- The environment in which it functions
- The quality, age and standard of the appliance / wiring
- How intensively the equipment is used
- etc…
So, for example if you have an old piece of equipment which is used 24 hours of the day, in a built up humid environment. This should undergo a more thorough check than an fairly new appliance that is used one a month for 5 minutes at a time.
Providing the environment is clean and dry, it my be sufficient to carry out a visual inspection (if you know what you are looking for). If the equipment is functioning in a more harsh environment, it would be necessary to carry out a more demanding electrician test.
Electrical equipment should be tested fairly regularly (usually annually) to reduce the risk of the piece of equipment becoming unsafe since it’s previous test / inspection. Making notes with dates is a good way to keep track of electrical testing history. If faults are found of a specific appliance, we would highly recommend that it is checked more often.
